ALL ABOUT CROSSFIT
CrossFit is, quite simply, a sport—the “sport of fitness". It is a broad, general and inclusive programme focusing on functional movements that will prepare athletes for everyday life.
CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program designed to prepare trainees for any physical contingency. Weightlifting, sprints, endurance and gymnastics are combined along with others such as powerlifting in a constantly varied, high-intensity workout.
Class will typically start with a dynamic warm up, followed by skill work to refine the movements used in the workouts. This is followed by the “WOD”, workout of the day, a high intensity session of between 5 and 20 minutes. Finally a session is completed with stretching and cool down.
Community support is a large factor in CrossFit, workouts are done in a group setting with each athlete cheering on the next and a great sense of camaraderie. This can, like working out with a friend, really boost your performance and encourage you to keep up with attendance. Movements and challenging and varied, you could be introduced to anything from Olympic lifts to handstands. This is all done in a charged and competitive environment that will encourage you to push your limits and will boost overall fitness.
Caution is advised when approaching new activities as, although they are fun, all movements need to be done properly to avoid injury. Watch this video for insights into the basics of Crossfit movements and how to carry out each exercise. Athletes should listen to their body and avoid pushing too hard, losing form and risking injury. Always go at your own pace and only do reps at a speed that you do not compromise form. All movements are scalable so take the version of each movement that is accessible to you. By practicing movements properly and at the correct level, you will see quick improvement and minimize injury risk.
Sound interesting? Gyms are now popping up internationally so it should be easy to find somewhere to give CrossFit a try. Many gyms offer introductory classes where they will teach you the nine basic movements of CrossFit. Be sure to choose a good gym with competent, certified coaches.
